During the Dodecanese Campaign of 1943, the island of Leros became one of the Mediterranean's most fiercely contested strongholds. The Battle of Leros — fought in November 1943 as German forces sought to seize the fortified island — left a lasting imprint on Leros's landscape. Italian forces had established extensive underground depots to store war material — ammunition, ordnance, and field equipment — within the island's limestone bunkers and coastal fortifications.
